A Lesson Taught..?

(I am neither a Strategist nor a Diplomat or a Soldier. Just a pained citizen who believes that India had to do something far-reaching and decisive to end the incessant bullying by a dangerous neighbour.)

The longanimity of India has always been appreciated by the World community, but diplomatic brownie points does little to assuage the pain that India has endured for decades.  India cannot afford to be seen as reticent anymore, it had to respond to Pakistan’s provocations with an iron fist.

The expectations were high that MODI would spell out how his government intends to hit back at Pakistan during his first public appearance after Uri attack during the BJP conclave in Kerala. The tone and tenor of his speech was aggressive , but he kept his cards to himself revealing little about impending retaliation.

Sushma Swaraj in her hard hitting address to the UNGA was categorical that Kashmir is an integral part of India and warned Pakistan to back off. Her inference to ‘Terror sponsoring nation’ was obvious.

Today, India is on a firm footing. The world recognises India as a responsible, vibrant and a rapidly growing country, and on the other hand the world perceives Pakistan as a nation that aids and abets terrorism.

The past was different,
Kargil happened in the immediate aftermath of Phokran II Nuclear test,  India stood isolated.  Although Pakistan was comprehensively defeated in the conflict, India refrained from declaring an all out war solely because it lacked international support.

Dec 2011 Parliament attack saw a massive mobilisation of troops on both sides. India was again forced to ‘stand down’ under international pressure which was clearly biased in favour of Pakistan.
Pakistan was complicit in 2008 Mumbai attacks, the perpetrators roam free in Pakistan and India is unable to drum up support to bring them to book.

In the past, India’s responses to Pakistan’s habitual misdemeanours were ritualistic. And Pakistan’s fervid denial of any wrongdoing was always excruciatingly frustrating. But, times have changed, international opinion about both the countries have changed, Allies and friends have changed, leadership in India has changed. It’s just a matter of time for the dynamics of India’s responses to blatant provocations to change.

URI triggered the change that redefined India’s policy towards Nuclear and Terror blackmail by an unrepentant and irresponsible neighbour.

URI compelled India to reorient the narrative from the present amenable peace-loving stance to a intractable and bellicose stand vis-a-vis Pakistan.

By choosing to act now we choose to assert ourselves, we choose to tell our enemies that we are avengers, we choose to tell the world that Peace as an option has been exhausted.

The surgical strikes against Terror launch pads inside Pakistan occupied territory marks a paradigm shift in India’s strategic thinking. The message is loud and clear, the days of restraint are over – days of unrestrained retaliation are here to stay.

J. R. R. TOLKIEN quote says a lot –
“War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend“.

” India’s message is crystal clear – We shall not allow Pakistan to DEVOUR Us
