Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das (Nov 5, 1870 to June 6, 1925)

Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das was a freedom fighter.

In 1909 he successfully defended Aurobindo Ghosh on charges of involvement in Alipore bomb case.

He was a leading figure in Bengal during the period 1919 – 1922 Non Cooperation Movement. He then started ban on British clothes and wearing Khadi.

He also launched a  newspaper called Forward. afterwards changed its name to Liberty. He was the first Mayor of Calcutta Municipal Corporation. After Gaya session he launched Swaraj Party.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was his disciples.

Chittranjan Seva Sadan was raised on land and and home donated by him. He supported widow remarriage, cottage industry.

His belief  “Swaraj for the masses, not for the classes”. To him, “Swaraj is government by the people and for the people”.
