Flag Song

Who Wrote this Song?

Our Flag Song विजयी विश्व तिरंगा प्यारा, झण्डा ऊँचा रहे हमारा was written by Freedom fighter Shri Shyam Lal Gupt ‘Parshad’.

There are two different birth dates shown in various forum.  One is September 9, 1896 in Kanpur and other is Septem 16, 1893.

He was in charge of freedom movement in Fatehpur town and remained President of district congress committee for 19 years. He was arrested for his freedom activity in 1921, 1930 and 1944.

The song was written in 1924 as a patriotic poem. Indian National Congress adopted the song as official Flag Song. After that the song was first sung on Jallianwala Bagh Martyr’s Day on April 13, 1924 in Kanpur.

In 1938 Sarojni Naidu presented the song at Haripura Session of INC where Gandhiji, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Puroshottam Das Tandon were present.

On 15th August 1952 during the Independence Day celebrations was asked to sing the song.  He was honored with Padma Shri in 1969.

Though a major contribution in freedom struggle and honored well but his family lived in very poor financial condition. Government in central and state have hardly done anything (according to media report).

Prominent leaders have hardly visited Kanpur on his birth and death anniversary. However, common and local people remember him.
