Apart from being a Freedom Fighter Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya has done many notable things in his life. Here are some facts one should know about Pandit Madam Mohan Malviya.
He required 1 crore for setting up Banaras Hindu University . It took years of hard work. Around 50 lac Rupees were collected in the form of donation from rich and poor. King of Bikaner, Jodhpur, Kashmir and Darbhanga played key role in collection.
While in school he started writing poems under the name Makarand. In 1891 he started practicing in Allahabad District Court, later he practiced in Allahabad High Court as well. He defended accused in 1922 Chauri Chaura riots and successfully saved 152 accused from death penalty.
In 1924 he acquired Hindustan Times with help from Lala Lajpat Rai and GD Birla. As Chairman of the newspaper he also launched hindi edition of the newspaper Hindustan Dainik in 1936.
He supported widow remarriage and apposed child marriage.
On May 30, 1932 he launched “Buy Indian” movement.
In 1934 he formed Congress Nationalist Party. His party contested elections of Central Legislature and has the credit of winning 12 seats. This was in protest against the The Communal Award that was announced in 1932 to grant separate electorates to minority communities in Indian legislatures.
In 1941 formed Goraksha Mandal.
Satyamev Jayate was popularised by Malviyaji and later adopted as National Motto.
