Previously, we talked about options for students, who are having medical stream, besides doing MBBS. Lastly, we talked about becoming doctors in many different fields and plus few other options too. But guess what we can become engineers in biology too. Those courses include biotechnology and bioinformatics.
The field of Biotechnology is a combination of two subjects- Biology and Technology. Broadly speaking, it brings together concepts of Biology and Engineering and aims at putting concepts of both these subjects together to develop treatments for various diseases and do something helpful for living forms.
There are two similar courses in the field of biotechnology, you can either do engineering in the branch or pursue a B.Sc. Biotechnology degree. But B.E./B.Tech. degree has more value than B.Sc. Degree. Rest the choice is yours.
B.Sc. Biotechnology course is a 3 years long course where as B.E./B.Tech is a 4 years long Undergraduate Level Bachelor’s Degree program. This course is all about using concepts of Biology for tweaking and modifying biological systems, cell structures, biological processes etc so that they can be used in Engineering and Technology related applications to improve and enrich various sectors such as healthcare, Food processing, etc.
Biotechnology is a rapidly developing field. It is safe to say that there are ample job opportunities for B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology Graduates in private sector. Government sector too offers job opportunities. Some prominent industries where Biotechnology professionals may find jobs are- Pharmaceuticals Industry, Healthcare sector, Chemical Industry, Agriculture sector, Food Processing and Technology as well as Research sector. Graduates may also take up teaching job (as lecturer) after completing M.E./M.Tech. program.
Bioinformatics is a field that develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data. It is concerned with the use of information technology in the area of molecular biology. It includes the purpose of computer technology to manage and study the biological data. The purpose of bioinformatics is to collect the material goods of biological information and use it for the development of living standards of human beings. As an interdisciplinary field of science, bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics and engineering to analyze and interpret biological data.
There is lot of scope in this field. Most of the professionals are employed in biotechnology, biomedical sciences and pharmaceutical companies. Graduates can seek employment in private and government hospitals. Fresh graduates can also opt for teaching jobs in universities and colleges.
Students can also work with scientific research institutes. There are lots of career opportunities available in India as well as in foreign countries for bioinformatics scientists.

3. Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery
BHMS is a 4½ years long course. After completing the course, students have to do an internship lasting a period of 1 year. Thus, in total, this course takes 5½ years to complete.
BHMS course focuses on the principles of Homeopathic medicine system. This course includes studying and teaching of modern anatomy, physiology, pathology and diagnostic procedures, principles of medicine, preventive and social medicine , toxicology, forensic medicine, ENT, gynaecology & obstetrics, Ophthalmology, principles of surgery, etc. along with corresponding homoeopathic subjects.
Numerous job opportunities are present in Government as well as Private sector for BUMS graduates. Self-employment is another good option available in front of them. Graduates may start practicing Unani medicine system as ‘Hakims’. Graduates will be able to find such a job in Government as well as Private Unani hospitals, Nursing homes and Health centres. Unani pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies are also known to hire graduates. Government drug manufacturing units recruits graduates too! Graduates may take up teaching jobs in such establishments.

4. Food Technology
Food Technologist demand is growing day by day as rise in demand for packaged food and its long preservation due to many modern changes in food habits. Food technology deals with the scientific understanding about foods we eat and what is the actual production process to make foods, packaged and preserved. A degree in this field can get one the job of Food Quality controller, Research Officer, Packaging manager and a lot of others jobs.
5. Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology
BASLP is a 4 years long undergraduate level professional course that Science stream students may pursue after completing 12th standard.
BASLP course consists of two main subjects- Audiology and Speech Language Pathology. Audiology is the science of hearing. It deals with study of sound and balance, hearing and balance disorders and the rehabilitation of people suffering from hearing and balance disorders. Speech Language Pathology is the science that deals with the study of speech, languages and disorders occurring in people. The course provides professional training to students and makes them capable of preventing, identifying and treating speech, hearing and balance disorders in people.
Common places to find work are- Government and Private Hospitals, NGOs and Schools for Children with hearing and speech disorder.

6. Nursing Courses
Nursing is a noble profession. It is an important part of healthcare sector. Nursing is a job oriented medical course. Healthcare sector is one such area, which is recession proof. No matter what’s the economic status of a nation- Developing or Developed- there is always a demand for healthcare services. Students, who are compassionate, willing to work for others, sacrifice personal comfort for others, comfortable with medical procedures and treatment may take up this profession. The work may involve tiring sessions and odd work schedule. But it is one such career, where one may touch and change the lives of patients. Usually, nursing is considered as a field suitable for females. Actually male candidates may also perform well in this area. Male nurses are also in huge demand.
