The Anatomy of Autonomy by Chidambaram

‘Autonomy didn’t work – Give more Autonomy’, is a statement that echos the core belief of Congress and such statements stem from their fundamental conviction that, ‘Appeasement is never enough – Appease more’.

The social media comments on  P. Chidambaram’s statement ranged between severe condemnation and appreciation. But setting aside the controversy for a minute, think, why such a statement and why now, when a crucial election is about to take place?

Theory 1.

Those who believe that Congress has scored a self-goal need a quick rethink because a statement coming from a former Home Minister (who aspired to be a PM) cannot be dismissed as a wayward comment. So, it can be surmised that there is a strategic game-plan at work and that plan has something to do with Gujarat.

With corruption free Governancean USP of BJP, with the development of 60 years of Congress rule dwarfed by the development of the past three years, with India’s global stature growing rapidly and with the demography of the saffron surge engulfing all of India, the Congress arsenal has dwindled drastically leaving a sole weapon to fight elections with i.e., Appeasement.

By advocating greater autonomy their true intention is to trigger a chain reaction of resentment from the Right Wingers. They want Article 370 & Article 35A to remain in the spotlight, rather, they want the Right Wing to bray for abrogation of the articles,  which in-turn will incite passions in the valley. A simmering Kashmir gives the Congress a stick to beat the BJP with and the same stick serves to drum-up support of the minorities.

The dogma of appeasement is inherent to the Congress, they have diligently practiced it in the past and will continue to do so without the sigma or remorse ever affecting them.

Theory 2.

It’s no secret that Chidambaram’s son, Karti Chidambaram and his dealings are under the CBI lens. Although PC has nonchalantly dismissed the charges as vindictive politics, the noose is nevertheless tightening rapidly.

The Congress leadership has defended PC but it’s glaring that the leadership has neither shown the vehemence nor cohesiveness to rally solidly behind PC at a time when he is cornered and vulnerable. The stoic silence of Ahmed Patel vis-a-vis l’affaire Chidambaram & Co., shows that not all is well in the upper echelons of Congress leadership.

Although both PC and Ahmed are indispensable to Congress but when push comes to shove, PC fears that he will be dispensed with. This coupled with the fear that Ahmed Patel could grow in stature if the Congress does well in Gujarat can also be a reason for PC’s indirect salvo to scuttle Ahmed’s rise.

Wily Chidambaram is a suave operator who knows when to ‘show his cards’, it seems like he has made a start with his ‘Autonomy’ comments.
